Cristiano Garcia Mendes

Cristiano Garcia Mendes is a professor in the Department of International Relations at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC Minas), working at both the undergraduate level and in the Graduate Program. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the Universidade de Brasília (UnB).

His research investigates international security, terrorism, private military companies, and failed states through post-structuralist approaches and discourse analysis. The guiding thread is a single question: how does political language construct the enemy, the threat, and the very idea of sovereignty.

Over the course of his career, he has carried out academic work abroad — including at the University of Victoria (Canada), the University of Sydney (Australia), and the Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal) — and has been active in the Associação Brasileira de Relações Internacionais (ABRI). He has published in journals such as Contexto Internacional, Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional, Lua Nova, and Caderno CRH.
